The Golden Birch is also called Yellow Birch south of the border.
The yellowish sheen to the rather loose and laterally peeling bark on the trunk of the Golden Birch makes it easy to recognize this tree in the woods.
The leaves, shaped as shown, are 2 1/2 to 5 inches long and have fringe-like teeth. Through the Automn and Winter the bare branchlets carry not only the little upright seed-filled cones or “strobiles” of the season but the pendent and tightly sealed staminate catkins that, through whirlings snows and icy blasts, wait patiently for the warm summons of returning Spring. The seed “cones” provide food for many birds in Winter.
