The bird is about 7 inches long. It is probably the most common flycatcher over the eastern half of North America. This flycatcher is easy to identify by voice. Its regular and frequently repeated double note is "Phee-bee, phee-bee," from which it derives its name. It is a small bird, grayish-brown above, darker on the head, and white underneath. It has the habit of wagging its tail while perched. It likes to build in and around houses, and barns of any kind. Any projection under cover will do as a support for its nest.
