The Red Trillium is one of the most elegant lilies found at Breeches during the Spring and early Summer. Its fragrance is rather unpleasant but its beauty is certainly hiding the bad odours of its leaves. As it has a flower with three petals surrounded by three green sepals that fill the spaces between the petals. The head of the flower tends to droop over shortly after it comes into bloom, which coincides with the time when Robins start singing around the grass in early spring.
That is the origin of the name “Wake-Robin” given to the Trillium in some of the literature from our friends down South. Look for this beautiful flower, a perfect 3-3-3 (3 leaves, 3 petals and 3 sepals) that you can find on the Chemin du Club as well as in most of the trails of Breeches Nature Reserve.
